Window AC Leaking Water Inside? Here’s What’s Actually Causing It

Nothing ruins a good nap on a hot afternoon like waking up to a puddle on the windowsill, or worse, a drip landing right on your face. Window AC units are supposed to send condensation outside, not throw a rainstorm into your living room. If yours has started leaking indoors, it’s not broken in some mysterious, expensive way. Nine times out of ten it’s one of a handful of fixable problems, and most of them take less than ten minutes to sort out.

It’s Probably Not Level

Window units are designed to tilt slightly toward the outside, usually by about a quarter to half inch. That tilt lets gravity do its job and send collected condensation out through the back of the unit instead of pooling and spilling inward. If your unit got bumped, or if it was installed flat to begin with, water has nowhere to go but toward you. Grab a level, check the pitch, and shim the inside edge up if needed. This single fix solves the problem more often than people expect.

The Drain Hole Is Clogged

Most units have a small drain hole on the underside of the housing, and it’s basically a magnet for dust, lint, and the occasional dead bug. When it clogs, condensation backs up inside the unit and eventually finds its way out the front. A pipe cleaner or a straightened paper clip is usually enough to clear it. Do this once a season and you’ll avoid a lot of grief.

The Filter Is Filthy

A dirty filter restricts airflow over the evaporator coil, which makes the coil run colder than it should. Colder coil means more frost buildup, and frost buildup means a bigger meltdown once the unit cycles off or airflow improves. That extra water often overwhelms the drain pan. Pull the filter and hold it up to the light. If you can’t see through it, it’s past time to rinse it out or swap it for a new one. Energy Star’s room AC guidance also points out that a clogged filter drags down efficiency, so you’re not just risking leaks, you’re paying more to run a unit that’s working harder than it needs to.

Low Refrigerant Freezes the Coil

This one’s less DIY-friendly, but worth knowing about. If refrigerant levels are low, the coil can get too cold and ice over completely. When that ice eventually melts, it dumps far more water than the little drain pan was ever built to handle. If you’ve cleared the drain hole and leveled the unit and it’s still flooding, especially alongside weak cooling performance, this is a strong candidate. That’s a call-a-technician problem, not a paper-clip problem.

The Drain Pan Itself Is Cracked or Overflowing

Older units, especially ones that have survived a few moves or a rough window installation, sometimes have a warped or cracked internal pan. There’s not much you can do about that short of replacement, but in the meantime, a small condensate pump can redirect overflow before it hits your floor. It’s a cheap workaround that buys time, especially if you’re not ready to replace the unit this season.

A Few Things Worth Keeping on Hand

  • A basic window AC support bracket to keep the unit properly tilted and stable, especially in older window frames that don’t hold a snug fit.
  • A small condensate pump for units that consistently overflow, particularly helpful if the unit sits above finished flooring or carpet.
  • Replacement AC filters sized for your model, since a filter that’s genuinely too far gone to rinse clean just needs to go.

Indoor leaks are annoying but they’re rarely a sign your unit is dying. Check the tilt first, clear the drain hole second, and look at the filter third. If all of that checks out and water is still showing up where it shouldn’t, that’s when it’s worth calling in someone who can check refrigerant levels properly rather than guessing your way through it.
