You flip the switch, the fan whirs to life, and twenty minutes later the mirror still looks like it’s been through a car wash. This isn’t your fan breaking down. It’s physics being annoying, and August is the month it’s most annoying.

The dew point is the real culprit
Bathroom exhaust fans work by pulling moist air out and letting drier air replace it. That whole system depends on there being drier air somewhere nearby to pull in. In August, when outdoor humidity and indoor humidity are both sitting in the swampy zone, your fan is basically trading one batch of damp air for another batch of damp air. It’s still doing its job. It just doesn’t have much to work with.
This is the same reason a fan that clears the mirror in ten minutes flat every February can take twice as long in the middle of summer. The fan’s performance hasn’t changed. The air it’s competing against has.
But also, check the boring stuff
Before you blame the weather entirely, rule out a few unglamorous possibilities, because a struggling fan and a genuinely weak fan look identical from the switch on the wall.
- The duct is crushed or sagging. Flexible ducting in attics loves to droop over time, and a kinked duct can cut airflow by half even if the fan motor sounds fine.
- It’s undersized for the room. Bathroom fans are rated in CFM, and a lot of builder-grade fans are sized for the bathroom on paper, not the bathroom with a rainfall shower head someone installed later. The Energy Star sizing guidelines are a good sanity check if you’ve never actually looked at your fan’s CFM rating.
- The vent cap outside is blocked. Wasp nests, leaves, lint, whatever. If the exterior exhaust is obstructed, the fan is just moving air in a circle inside the duct.
What actually helps in humid months
Running the fan longer is the easiest fix and the one nobody wants to hear. Most people shut it off the second they’re out of the shower. In summer, that’s about a third of the time it actually needs. Let it run for a solid 20 to 30 minutes after you’re done, not just while you’re in there.
A humidity-sensing switch takes that decision out of your hands entirely. It monitors the moisture level and keeps the fan running until the air actually drops back to normal, instead of running on a fixed timer that has no idea what the weather’s doing. Something like a humidity-sensing fan switch is a cheap upgrade that solves this problem permanently, and most are a straightforward swap for your existing switch.
If your bathroom doesn’t have a window, a small plug-in dehumidifier as backup during the worst humidity stretches isn’t overkill. It’s just acknowledging that one exhaust fan can only push against so much outdoor moisture before it needs help.
Don’t ignore it if it’s been going on for weeks
A fan losing its edge for a day or two during a humid spell is normal. A bathroom that stays damp for hours after every shower, all month, is a mold setup. Grout lines, the underside of the vanity, the ceiling above the shower — these are the first places it shows up, and by the time you can see it, it’s already established itself. If you’re noticing a musty smell that lingers even with the fan running, that’s your cue to actually pull the vent cover and check the duct, not just wait it out until fall.
The good news is that this particular annoyance really is seasonal. Once outdoor humidity drops, your fan will suddenly feel twice as powerful again, even though nothing about it changed. In the meantime, give it more runtime than you think it needs and check that nothing’s physically blocking the exhaust path. That combination fixes ninety percent of “my fan stopped working” complaints that are really just “my fan is fighting August.”
