Being safe in your own home may seem obvious but there are sometimes risks for those HNWIs (High Net Worth Individuals), celebrities and other significant members of society.
While you may view your house as simply a home to enjoy and relax, there may be risk factors that are only apparent when reviewing the building in a residential security review. For example a large pet or dog door may seem harmless enough but can also present an unsecured entry way to burglars. Residential security is a critical component of any personal security program and it is important to not completely drop your guard whilst not immediately in the public eye. Here is a checklist to help make your home more secure from intruders and other malicious activity.
- Fit quality, secure locks on all entrances and windows. Preferably choose deadbolt locks for external doors to offer added protection
- Never leave “hidden” keys to the property outside. If you feel it is necessary to have a spare set, leave them with a trusted neighbour, friend or colleague.
- Keep doors locked even when you are home to prevent easy entry for attackers – however it is vital to have keys nearby a locked door to stop fire risk accidents.
- Ensure fuse boxes and external power sources are kept secure and locked, as well as being monitored regularly for full functionality
- If you are installing window grilles or bars, make sure your new additions are fire safety compliant to prevent creating a hazard should the window need to be used as an accident in an emergency.
- Periodically check your smoke alarms and burglar alarms for full functionality
- Keep flashlights or torches located around your home and check batteries often to ensure they still work
- Build up a relationship with your neighbours – by looking out for each other’s families and property you are adding another factor of security
Another safety procedure to implement in your home is to create a designated retreat or “safe haven” within your house. This should have certain supplies prepared and have the ability to become completely contained and secure like a panic room.
Supplies to store in this area or room at all times should include:
- Emergency mobile phone
- Fire extinguisher
- 5 day supply of food for each household member
- Drinking water
- Candles, matches and torches
- Batteries
- Bedding to create comfortable sleeping areas
- Temporary toilet facilities
- Medical/first aid kit
- Additional clothing
- Activities such as books
