Why Your Window AC Unit Is Dripping Water Inside the House Instead of Outside

You noticed the puddle before you noticed the problem. A little dark patch on the windowsill, maybe a drip landing on the floor every few seconds like a leaky faucet you can’t turn off. Your first thought is probably that the unit is broken. It’s usually not. It’s crooked.

Window air conditioners are designed to drain condensation out the back, onto your lawn or patio, not onto your carpet. That only works if the unit is tilted slightly downward toward the outside, usually by about a quarter to half an inch of slope. When people install these things, they tend to level them out visually so the unit looks straight and sits flush in the window frame. Looks nice. Also completely wrong. A perfectly level unit, or worse, one that’s tilted slightly inward, sends all that condensate right back into your house instead of outside where it belongs.

Why This Happens More in Late Summer

By late July, units have been running nonstop for weeks. Vibration from the compressor cycling on and off, combined with the weight of the unit shifting in a slightly worn window track, causes even a properly installed AC to creep out of its ideal tilt over time. Add in a heavy humid stretch (which, if you’re anywhere in the eastern half of the country right now, you definitely are) and the unit is pulling more moisture out of the air than it did in June. More condensate plus a bad tilt equals the drip show on your windowsill.

The Fix Is Annoyingly Simple

Turn the unit off, unplug it, and check the pitch. Most units have adjustable leveling feet or a bracket underneath, but if yours doesn’t, a shim works fine. A wood shingle, a folded piece of cardboard, even a couple of paint stir sticks taped together under the back edge can do the job. You’re aiming for that slight backward tilt, just enough that a marble placed on top would roll toward the outdoors, not into your living room.

If you want to stop eyeballing it, a small torpedo level makes this a thirty-second job instead of a guessing game, and it’s worth keeping in a kitchen drawer for this exact purpose. While you’ve got the unit out, take a look at the drain hole on the back of the housing. Dust, pollen, and general summer grime clog these more often than people expect, and a clogged drain will overflow no matter how well the unit is tilted. A quick clean with a pipe cleaner or a straightened wire hanger usually clears it right up.

When It’s Not the Tilt

If the tilt looks fine and it’s still leaking, the culprit is often a dirty air filter making the coil freeze up, then thaw and dump water all at once when the unit cycles off. Pull the filter and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, that’s your answer. The Energy Star guidelines for room air conditioners recommend cleaning or replacing filters every month during heavy use season, which, let’s be honest, almost nobody actually does until something goes wrong.

One more thing worth checking if you’re dealing with a heavier, older unit: window frame supports can sag under the weight over a full season of running, throwing off the tilt even after you fix it. An exterior support bracket takes the strain off the window sash and keeps the unit sitting the way you set it, instead of slowly sliding back to level over a few humid weeks.

None of this is complicated. It’s just one of those things nobody tells you when you buy the unit, and by the time it’s a problem, you’re standing in a puddle trying to figure out if you need a repairman or a shim. Usually, it’s the shim.
