Somewhere around the Fourth of July, a door in your house started doing this thing where it either won’t latch anymore or you have to body-check it to get it shut. It’s not your imagination, and it’s not the house settling in some dramatic way. It’s wood, doing exactly what wood does when the air gets thick with moisture.

The Wood Is Literally Absorbing the Air
Interior doors are usually solid or engineered wood, and wood is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture straight out of humid air and swells. In winter, when indoor air is dry, that same door might rattle in its frame with visible gaps. Come summer, humidity climbs, the wood plumps up, and suddenly the door is fighting the frame for space. It’s the same door behaving two completely different ways depending on the season, which is annoying but not actually a sign anything’s broken.
The usual suspects are doors on the humid side of the house: bathrooms, basements, anything near a kitchen, or a door on an exterior wall that gets direct afternoon sun and heat. Solid wood doors swell more dramatically than hollow-core ones, so if you’ve got a nice old solid door, it’s going to be the biggest drama queen in the house this time of year.
What Actually Fixes It (Temporarily and Permanently)
Short-term, don’t reach for a plane and start shaving wood off the edge in a panic. Wood swelling is seasonal, and a door you sand down to fit in July can end up with a visible gap by January once the air dries out and the wood shrinks back. Sanding is a real fix, but only if the problem is happening every single summer and getting worse, not a one-time thing.
- Check the hinges first. Sometimes it’s not swelling at all, it’s grime and rust buildup making the hinge pins stick. A quick shot of a dry lubricant or a little household oil can solve what looks like a wood problem.
- Look for the actual contact point. Rub a piece of chalk along the door frame, close the door gently, then open it. Wherever the chalk transfers onto the door edge is exactly where it’s binding, so you’re not guessing where to sand.
- Sand a little, check often. If it really is swelling, remove the door, use a block plane or sandpaper on just the binding spot, and test frequently. You want the door to close cleanly with light pressure, not fall open on its own.
- Adjust the strike plate if the latch isn’t quite lining up anymore. Sometimes the fix isn’t the door at all, it’s a strike plate that needs to move a sixteenth of an inch.
The Better Long-Term Move: Deal With the Humidity
If every door in the house is doing this, sanding each one is treating the symptom. The real issue is indoor humidity that’s too high, and the EPA generally recommends keeping indoor relative humidity between 30 and 50 percent for both comfort and to protect your house itself, doors included. A room-by-room hygrometer is cheap and tells you exactly where you stand instead of guessing based on how sticky the air feels.
A portable dehumidifier in the worst-affected rooms, like a basement or a bathroom without great ventilation, can genuinely stop the swelling problem before it starts. Something like a mid-size dehumidifier running through the humid months will keep doors, drawers, and even hardwood floors behaving themselves. If it’s just one specific door that’s a repeat offender every year, a small handheld block plane kept in a drawer specifically for this problem isn’t a bad idea either.
Either way, resist the urge to force a swollen door shut over and over. That’s how hinges get bent and frames get cracked, and then you’ve got a repair project instead of a minor summer annoyance.
