Why Your Front Door Suddenly Won’t Latch Right (It’s Not the Lock)

You jiggle the handle, shoulder-check the door, maybe curse a little, and finally it clicks shut. This didn’t happen in April. It’s happening now because August humidity is doing exactly what it does to every other piece of wood in your house, except this time it’s the one thing standing between you and your air conditioning.

Wood Swells, Doors Don’t Care About Your Schedule

Solid wood doors and door frames absorb moisture from the air. When humidity climbs the way it does in late summer, the wood expands, sometimes just a millimeter or two, sometimes enough that the door genuinely won’t sit flush in the jamb anymore. The strike plate and the latch bolt, which lined up perfectly in the dry months, are suddenly fighting each other. This is different from a door that’s warped or hung crooked. It’s temporary, seasonal swelling, and it usually gets worse right around now before easing off once fall humidity drops.

The tell-tale sign: it’s not just annoying, it’s inconsistent. Fine in the morning, sticky by afternoon. Worse on humid days, fine after a dry spell. If your door behaves differently depending on the weather, that’s your answer.

Don’t Reach for the Plane Yet

The instinct is to shave down the door or the jamb so it fits now. Resist that. Once the weather turns and the wood contracts back to its normal size, you’ll have a door that’s too small for its frame, rattling and leaking air all winter. Planing a door to fit August conditions is a rookie mistake that creates a worse problem in October.

Instead, try these first, roughly in order of how annoying they are:

  • Adjust the strike plate. Loosen the screws and shift the plate a hair, or use a metal file to widen the opening slightly. This is reversible and takes ten minutes.
  • Check the hinges. Tightening loose hinge screws can pull a sagging door back into better alignment, which sometimes solves latch issues that look like a swelling problem but aren’t.
  • Sand lightly, not aggressively. If the door is binding against the frame (not just failing to latch), a light pass with fine sandpaper on the spot that’s rubbing can help without permanently undersizing the door. Look for the shiny or worn patch on the door edge, that’s where it’s making contact.
  • Weatherstripping swap. Sometimes it’s not the door at all, it’s compressed or swollen weatherstripping. Fresh weatherstripping that seals properly without over-compressing can fix a sticky feel that has nothing to do with the wood itself.

The Real Fix Is Prevention, Not Correction

Exterior doors that swell every summer usually aren’t sealed well enough on all six sides, top and bottom included, which most people never paint or seal. Moisture gets in through the end grain and the door swells unevenly. If this happens every single year around the same time, it’s worth pulling the door off its hinges once, in a dry stretch of weather, and giving the top and bottom edges a proper coat of exterior primer and paint or a good wood sealant. That one afternoon of work tends to fix the annual problem for good.

A humidity gauge near the entryway isn’t a bad idea either, especially if you’re chasing down whether it’s really the door or something with your indoor climate control. A basic indoor humidity monitor costs less than a locksmith visit and tells you whether you’re dealing with a wood problem or a ventilation problem.

If none of this works and the door has been sticking for years regardless of season, that’s a different issue entirely, likely a foundation settling or a frame that’s genuinely out of square. But if this is new-ish and weather-dependent, it’s almost certainly just wood being wood. Give it a small adjustment now, and give it a proper sealing job once the humidity breaks. Your future August self will thank you.
