The Real Reason Your Front Door Sticks in Summer Heat but Swings Fine All Winter

You’ve probably yanked on your front door a little harder than dignity allows sometime in the last few weeks. It sticks in the frame, drags along the threshold, or needs a hip-check to close all the way. Then October rolls around and suddenly it’s swinging like nothing ever happened. That’s not your imagination, and it’s not a haunted door. It’s wood doing exactly what wood does.

Wood is hygroscopic, which is a fancy way of saying it absorbs moisture from the air like a very slow sponge. In August, humidity is up, the air is thick, and your door (or at least the door frame, if it’s wood or the door itself has a wood core) swells slightly as it soaks up that moisture. Even a millimeter or two of swelling is enough to turn a door that used to glide shut into one that catches on the strike plate or scrapes the weatherstripping. Come winter, the air dries out, the wood contracts back down, and the gap returns. This cycle repeats every single year whether you notice it or not.

Solid wood doors are the most dramatic about this, but even steel and fiberglass doors aren’t fully immune, since the jamb and frame around them are usually wood. Houses built on slab foundations or in especially humid climates tend to notice it more, and older homes with original wood frames are basically the poster child for seasonal door drama.

How to tell if it’s actually humidity and not something worse

Before you blame the weather, rule out the bigger issues. If the door has been sticking for months regardless of season, or the gap between door and frame looks noticeably uneven (wider at the top than the bottom, or vice versa), you might be dealing with a settling foundation or a hinge that’s sagged loose. A quick way to check: look at the gap around all four sides of the door when it’s closed. If it’s roughly even everywhere, humidity swelling is the likely culprit. What actually fixes the summer stick

Resist the urge to plane down the door the first time this happens. If it’s purely seasonal swelling, sanding it to fit in July means it’ll be too loose and drafty by January. Instead:

  • Tighten the hinges first. Loose screws let the door drop slightly, which is often what’s actually causing the rub, not the swelling itself. A cordless driver and five minutes will tell you a lot.
  • Rub a bar of paraffin wax or a candle stub along the edge that sticks. It reduces friction enough to get through the worst of the season without permanently removing wood.
  • Check the weatherstripping. Compressed, worn strips can make a door feel tighter than it really is. Fresh weatherstripping often solves more of the problem than people expect.
  • If it’s genuinely unusable, plane it, but only the high-friction spots. Mark the rub line with chalk or a pencil, close the door a few times to transfer the mark, then remove wood only from that exact strip with a hand plane, not the whole edge.
